This issue has only been observed in Windows 10. This has been observed in all tested version of Adobe Reader. Clearing these processes and attempting to open Reader again does not work. Task Manager will show Adobe Reader's process (acrord32.exe) listed for each time you clicked to open it, but the GUI (graphical user interface) will not load. Test opening one of these files to make sure it uses the app you selected. This will open the Windows Store and you can then search by file type for a program. If no app is shown, click on Look for an app in the Store. When the Choose an app dialog box opens, click on the app you want to use ( Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, in this example) as the default.
